Hilo
While many visitors to Hawaii’s Big Island fly directly into Kona and spend most of their time on the western coast, the city of Hilo is also worth considering. On the island’s eastern side, Hilo is just as accessible from the mainland, with direct flights from several major airlines. And it’s a stop you won’t want to miss on your Hawaiian vacation. With its incredible natural beauty, there’s plenty for outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy, as well as plenty of culture and history are thrown in for good measure.

Kona
From just south of Anaehoomalu Bay (Waikoloa Beach Resort) to Manuka Park, the sunny Kona District spans nearly two-thirds of the entire West side of Hawaii (Kau). This vast area is home to everything from coffee farms to historic Hawaiian landmarks. King Kamehameha spent his final years in Kailua-Kona. You can take a walking tour of Kona’s history at places like Hulihee Palace, Mokuaikaua Church, and the Ahuena Heiau, which are home to shops, restaurants, and nightlife. Other historic sites include Kealakekua Bay to the south, where Captain James Cook first set foot on the island in 1778 and was later killed.
